What is the best way to cope with nerves?
Learning to drive can be stressful and we expect that you will probably be nervous if you only have limited experience behind the wheel.
The main cause of anxiety and nervousness in drivers is a lack of confidence in their personal ability; we will help you improve your skills and gain confidence so that driving nerves become a thing of the past.
Here are some tips to help you cope with your driving nerves:
- Confidence comes with competence: practice and improve your driving skills.
- Don’t hide your nervousness – it’s perfectly normal.
- Take a deep breath and try to relax; if your nerves are starting to take over, find a safe place to pull over and take a break.
- Commentate as you drive – it helps to keep your mind on the job and avoid anxiety build up.
- When it comes to the test day, feel free to break the ice and talk to the instructor if it’s going to help you relax.
- Don’t change your driving style on the day of your test; trust that our instructors have shown you the best way to perform all manoeuvres.
Most drivers find that their nerves subside as their driving progresses. We don’t recommend that you take the test until we think you’re ready – we want you to pass and we want you to be safe. Therefore, if we have told you that you’re ready to get your P’s, you need to have confidence in your ability. Everyone experiences a few nerves on their test day, but if you’re a competent and confident driver you will have no trouble reining them in.
